15 November 2010 @ 9:26 PMThomson fertility centre case
On 4 November 2010, it was found that a couple had gone through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) at Thomson Fertility Centre but turned out that their baby has the mother's DNA makeup, but not the father's. This incident had brought up the awareness of social about IVF. Most of people and even Thomson Fertility Centre itself was shocked by the fact. I believe that most of us including myself will never expect this incident to happen in Singapore or in Thomson Fertility Centre as the healthcare sector in Singapore is prominent around the world. The couple has gone through physically and mentally hardship throughout the period of IVF treatment and during the pregnancy especially the mother. They might have spent around10k for the IVF treatment excluding other expenses and the effort that they had put in for having this baby which is invaluable. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a disappointment. In my opinion, we should be more concern about the future of the couple and the baby and not to figure out who fault it is as we cannot do any changes on it anymore. Since the couple has already decided to keep the baby with them, what we can do now is to contribute our bit to them. Organizations like voluntary welfare organizations (VWO) in Singapore can help to set up a fundraiser to collect money for the future planning of the baby although money is the not the main issue for this incident. Other than fund raising, voluntary organizations can also provide counseling for the couple and for the baby when he/she is mature enough to understand why he/she is physically different from the parents. I believe that love can overcome any obstacles. No matter the baby is biologically theirs or not, I believe the couple will give all their best to the baby as they had gone through hardship to reach this stage, there is not point for them to give up and it is not easy to do so too.I sincerely hope that this incident will not happens in future regardless whether it happens in Singapore or other countries.
